Trainer Cameron Crockett will have two chances in his first attempt to win the $50,000 Dubbo Cup on Sunday.
Crockett will saddle up Socks The Fox and Are You Sure in the 1600m race and will not be surprised if either wins although on recent form it's the former who could continue on his winning way.
Socks The Fox, to be ridden by Matthew Cahill, won the Narromine Cup at his latest start on August 17 where he defeated another Dubbo Cup contender, Double Halo.
With two runners, Crockett is hoping for the best and feels Socks The Fox will be right at his best again after having not raced for a few weeks.
"It was a very good win at Narromine and then the plan was to start him at Mudgee but he wasn't well weighted so I decided to keep him for this race," Crockett said.
"He is very versatile in that he can sit back and finish off a decent tempo or race on the speed and also sprint well.
"When his mind in on the job he is a very good horse."
Crockett's long-range plan is the country final at The Championships next autumn.
Dubbo Cup topweight Single Spirit has the score on the board winning the Casino and Sawtell Cups while he has been placed in the Coffs Harbour, South Grafton and Moree Cups.
Crockett said that form made Single Spirit the horse to beat.
The 28-year-old trainer paid credit to owner Debra Lynch who also bred Socks The Fox, the winner of six of his 18 starts.
"She does her selections for breeding very well and chooses the right stallions for her mares," Crockett said.
While he rates Socks The Fox as the better of his two chances, Crockett isn't writing off Are You Sure.
"He can bob up when he isn't given a chance so I expect him to also run well," he said.
