Owner declares Black Caviar a champion mum

Saturday 13 September 2014, 9:00am

Racing royalty has a new member with the birth of Black Caviar's first foal, a filly by Exceed And Excel.

The undefeated champion had a trouble-free delivery at a farm in the NSW Hunter Valley with managing part-owner Neil Werrett on hand.

The filly will be retained by the group which raced her mother who started 25 times, numbering an Australian record 15 Group One wins among her victories.

Werrett said he was looking forward to the next generation.

"She was a champion on the track and she's proved to be a champion mum with the safe arrival of her first foal overnight," Werrett said in a statement.

"We're incredibly proud that she's given birth to a filly and equally delighted that both Black Caviar and her foal are healthy and doing well.

"We wish to thank the team that have nurtured her so well throughout her pregnancy and ensured the safe delivery of the filly.

"Black Caviar was the people's horse and we are looking forward to sharing this filly's journey with the people of Australia.

"It will be a long and patient road from birth to racetrack so at this time we are revelling in the excitement of being proud parents."

The filly has two small white socks and a dash of white on her forehead.

Black Caviar was retired last year after winning her second TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick.

Among her other Group One wins are three Lightning Stakes, a race renamed in her honour, and the 2012 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
