Who Shot Thebarman boosted his chances of gaining a Cups berth with victory in the Group Three Bart Cummings at Flemington on Saturday.
This year's Auckland Cup winner made it two straight wins at Flemington when he drew away over the last 200m to post a 2-1/2 length win in the 2520-metre race as a short-priced favourite.
Who Shot Thebarman ($1.85) defeated Marksmanship ($9) with Anadjawun ($21) three-quarters of a length away third.
The Chris Waller-trained stayer was equal 39th in the latest Caulfield Cup ballot order and 33rd in the Melbourne Cup.
He is eligible to receive a weight penalty for Saturday's win.
The stayer has firmed to $11 in Caulfield Cup betting and $15 in Melbourne Cup markets.
Waller's Melbourne stable representative Justine Hales says the plan is to sneak into the Caulfield Cup on the way to the Melbourne Cup.
Glen Boss made his run on Who Shot Thebarman wide around the field approaching the turn.
Boss admitted the stayer didn't tow him into the race like his last start but said the last part of his race was his best.
"From the 200-metre mark it was impressive. He just goes and then you can't pull him up," Boss said.
"He's just got a great set of lungs and can really stay."
Boss said the lightly raced six-year-old, winner of eight of his 14 races, deserved the chance at showing whether he was good enough to be a Melbourne Cup horse.
"He's a young stayer as far as his career goes, he's got a really good record and has won over two miles already," Boss said.
"He legitimately deserves his chance."
