Rough Justice posts upset win at Caulfield

Saturday 20 September 2014, 1:39pm

An upset win to Rough Justice in the opening race at Caulfield didn't come as a complete shock to trainer Mat Ellerton.

Soundly beaten by Zeletto at Sandown last start, Rough Justice turned the tables on the odds-on favourite in Saturday's Pancare Foundation Plate (1000m).

The Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained Rough Justice ($31) was able to control the race in front and Zeletto, who sat outside the leader, was unable to match it with him.

Rough Justice scored by three quarters of a length over the fast-finishing debutant Supido ($6.50) with Zeletto ($1.65) third.

"He was pretty fat at Sandown and he had come on," Ellerton said.

Rough Justice is the latest stakes winner Ellerton and Zahra have prepared out of the broodmare Hard Rider after Utah Saints, Big Chill and Hard Stride.

Ellerton is not getting carried away with Saturday's win and is undecided where he will head next with Rough Justice.

"He's not a big horse so he's probably a little bit one-dimensional right now. It's a tough time of year and we're happy to win this race with him," he said.

Jockey Luke Nolen believes Supido has a bright future while Brad Rawiller said Zeletto was not at his best.

"I'm putting it down to his home track, his mind was thinking a bit," Rawiller said.
