Hi Son, Volkhere continue Bris domination

Saturday 20 September 2014, 1:54pm

Talented galloper Hi Son squared the ledger with arch-rival Volkhere and almost broke the course record at Doomben on Saturday.

Hi Son ($3.80) beat Volkhere ($5.50) by a short half head in the Canadian Club Handicap (2000m).

It was the fourth time in a row they had finished one-two in the open staying race of the day since the start of the season.

Both have now won twice and been second twice. Hi Son ran 2min1.86secs which was just outside the time ran by Group One mare Streama in this year's Doomben Cup.

Trainer Tony Gollan will resist the temptation to take Hi Son south and continue with his Brisbane campaign.

"At this stage he will have at least one more start in Brisbane and then we will give him a break," he said.

Meanwhile, stewards were set a poser when fourth-placed dead-heater Gotitallwrong protested against second paced Zoomania in the Mount Franklin Handicap (1350m).

The race went to Ms Ba Bella ($7) who beat Zoomania ($21) by a nose with a short half-head to Royal Consort ($16) in third place.

Gotitallwrong dead-heated with Moonlight Nova in fourth place, a head behind Zoomania.

Luke Tarrant, who rode Gotitallwrong, claimed he was checked at the 1100m after Zoomania moved in.

Stewards deliberated for five minutes before dismissing the protest.

Trainer Garnet Taylor now wants to run Ms Ba Bella in November's Roma Cup (1600m).

"It's a race I've always wanted to win and provided she doesn't get too much weight she will head there."
