Merion is at double-figure odds for the Caulfield Guineas Prelude but trainer Mike Moroney is not concerned if the gelding might be flying under the radar.
Merion won his two starts as a two-year-old and notched the second Listed win of his career when beating Caulfield Guineas favourite Chivalry by the barest margin in the Living Legends Stakes second-up as a three-year-old.
Merion's task has been made harder for Sunday's 1400m Guineas Prelude by a wide barrier in the big field, and Moroney said he had kept the gelding on the fresh side because otherwise he would be looking for further.
But he doesn't doubt his winning prospects.
"If he gets luck in running he's definitely the horse to beat," Moroney said.
"He's a seriously good horse."
Moroney said it would be up to Steven Arnold to try to plot the right course for Merion from gate 16.
"He's just going to need a bit of luck from that draw but he's a pretty bombproof horse as to how you can ride him," the trainer said.
"He's proven he can get back and proven he can go up on the speed. So that will be up to Steven to work out."
Group One placegetter Looks Like The Cat holds favouritism for the Group Three race at $3.70 after his strong first-up second behind Rich Enuff in the Group Two Danehill Stakes.
Rich Enuff, who has the outside barrier in the field of 18, is on the second line of betting at $5 as he looks to add to his Mitchell McKenzie Stakes and Danehill Stakes wins in his first try at 1400m.
Merion, a $13 chance in a competitive Guineas Prelude field, was fourth first-up at Moonee Valley over 1200m behind the impressive Rich Enuff before stepping up to 1400m and winning at Flemington.
