A breakthrough Group One win in Melbourne is in the sights of Sydney jockey Tommy Berry in the Sir Rupert Clarke Charity Cup.
Berry scored a Group Two win at Moonee Valley on Friday night aboard three-year-old Almalad in the Bill Stutt Stakes and will return to Melbourne on Sunday when he rides the Gai Waterhouse-trained Sweet Idea in 1400-metre sprint at Caulfield.
Sweet Idea sits on the top line of betting with multiple Group One winner Dissident.
The tough mare had no response for the explosive turn of foot Dissident produced first-up when they ran the quinella in the Group One Memsie Stakes over the same course and distance.
But Berry believes the circumstances in which they meet on Sunday gives Sweet Idea an opportunity to turn the tables.
Dissident has since won the Makybe Diva Stakes at 1600m and will be after his third Group One in a row.
"Sweet Idea's a real fighter," Berry said.
"She meets Dissident better at the weights. It's been well documented that he's heading towards the Cox Plate so he's not going to have the same zip he had last time they met."
Berry has ridden Group One winners in Sydney, Brisbane, Hong Kong and Singapore and is intent on making his mark in Melbourne during the spring carnival.
"It's the right season for me to do it. I've got a good bunch of horses behind me, good support with the trainers and it will only be my fault if I don't get it done," he said.
Sweet Idea, winner of six of her 15 starts with another seven placings and almost $2 million prize money, has been placed at the highest level on three occasions.
Dissident and Sweet Idea are at $6 in the field of 14 with Trust In A Gust at $7 and Cluster at $7.50.
