Kourkam wins couresty of daring Berry move

Saturday 27 September 2014, 3:04pm

This year's Melbourne Cup will come around too soon for Kourkam but with another 12 months under his belt, the French import could be a force to be reckoned with.

The Tony McEvoy-trained gelding claimed his third win at Rosehill on Saturday in the 1900-metre handicap after Tommy Berry steered him through a gap on the fence.

That move raised a few eyebrows with stewards who questioned whether there was actually a run.

Berry admitted there was probably three-quarters of a gap but said the horse was going so well, he knew he would take it.

"You don't see me take those runs very often but I knew he would take it," Berry said.

Stewards said all was well that ended well but reminded Berry of his responsibilities regarding safety.

Barry Wintle, who joined McEvoy as his Hawkesbury foreman just a few weeks ago, said there was a lot of upside to Kourkam.

Sent out at $15, Kourkam beat favourite Foreign Prince ($3.10) courtesy of Berry's daring move with Grand Marshal ($3.60) a half head third.

"He will get two miles," Wintle said.

"Tony may be able to get him to a race like the Geelong Cup this year but the big Cups are probably a year away.

"He is a horse with some class."
