Moreira looking for first Aussie Group One

Tuesday 30 September 2014, 5:05pm

Leading international jockey Joao Moreira heads to Sydney on Saturday in search of his first Australian Group One victory.

The Brazilian, a multiple Singapore champion who is now making his mark in Hong Kong, Moreira has a book of seven rides at Randwick, the majority of which are for leading trainer Chris Waller while he has also picked up a mount for Gai Waterhouse.

"I'm not too sure of what I'm riding at the moment," Moreira, who starts a three meeting suspension following racing in Hong Kong on Sunday, said.

"I've got seven rides at the moment, mostly for Chris Waller, and one for Gai Waterhouse as well."

One ride Moreira has studied is He's Your Man, the Waller-trained $6 third favourite in the Group One Epsom Handicap over 1600m.

He's Your Man was a last start winner of the Group Three Kingston Town Stakes over 2000m at Rosehill on September 13.

"He's got a lot of things going for him," Moreira said. "His form looks very good.

"He won over 2000 metres at his last start, is coming back to 1600 metres and drops in weight.

"I love going down to Australia. Everyone has treated me very well on previous trips.

"Hopefully I can have some luck on Saturday and win my first Group One race in Australia.

"In this game you need some sort of luck."

While winless at Group One level in Australia, Moreira tasted Group Two success aboard the John Thompson-trained Trusting in the Chelmsford Stakes and Hill Stakes in September 2011.

On previous trips to Australia, Moreira has flown in following racing in Singapore on a Friday night arriving in the early hours of Saturday morning, but this time he leaves Hong Kong early on Friday.

"I will be well rested for Saturday," Moreira said.

"I arrive on Friday afternoon from Hong Kong and I'm very much looking forward to my rides on Saturday."

Moreira will be seen in Melbourne during the spring carnival having been booked to ride Gris Caro in the Group One Caulfield Cup over 2400m on October 18.
