Hayes keen on Plate start with Crackerjack

Wednesday 15 October 2014, 6:33pm

Connections of Crackerjack King are keen to run the import in the Cox Plate and Tommy Berry is booked to ride should the horse gain a start.

Crackerjack King won a Group One race in Italy in 2012 before a lengthy injury absence and his best result since making his Australian debut for the David Hayes and Tom Dabernig stable has been a bold front-running third in the Underwood Stakes two starts ago.

He finished last in the Caulfield Stakes on Saturday after a slow start and Hayes said the horse was asked to work too hard racing wide for much of the race before weakening out of it in the straight.

"I was thrilled with his Underwood run and disappointed with the Caulfield Stakes, but I just don't think it was the horse's fault after he missed the start," Hayes said.

Hayes said the horse had come through the race really well and would go to Moonee Valley next Tuesday morning to gallop with many other Cox Plate hopefuls.

"If he gallops well, we'll be accepting. I think he'll gallop well, he always does," Hayes said.

"If he sizzles at the Valley on Tuesday morning, it might encourage the (Moonee Valley Racing Club) committee that he's in good form."

"He's a Group One winner that has been placed at Group One level one start ago."

The MVRC committee has the power to include or exclude horses from the weight-for-age championship based on form.

Super Cool is one horse which will not be an acceptor in the Cox Plate with the gelding to be spelled.
