Darci Be Good claim to test quinella pair

Thursday 16 October 2014, 12:03pm

Rival trainer Andrew Williamson has decided to book an apprentice rider as he attempts to break the stranglehold on Brisbane middle-distance races enjoyed by Hi Son and Volkhere.

Williamson's gelding Darci Be Good will take on Hi Son and Volkhere for the fourth time at Doomben on Saturday.

And he is entitled to be a frustrated trainer as Darci Be Good has run fourth, third and third in his three battles with the duo.

Darci Be Good showed he was getting close to win when third to the pair over 2200m at the Gold Coast last week.

Heathcote and Gollan have been using claiming apprentices on their horses, while Williamson has been using senior jockeys.

But Williamson will use apprentice Travis Wolfgram's 2kg allowance on Saturday to reduce Darci Be Good's weight to 55kg.

Volkhere and Hi Son have run the quinella five times in a row in similar races since the start of the racing season.

The Brisbane record of nine times for two horses running the quinella in the same race is held by the Group One winning-sprinters of the 1970s, Bengalla Lad and Charlton Boy.

But their dominance was spread over four years and not consecutive races.

The mighty Tulloch and his arch-rival Prince Darius ran the quinella on eight occasions in Group races in the 1950s.

It would be verging on ridiculous to compare Hi Son and Volkhere with that quartet of top horses but their rivalry has created a talking point.

Trainers Robert Heathcote (Volkhere) and Tony Gollan (Hi Son) have been enjoying the battle with some well-placed barbs.

"I think it has been terrific for racing here. The only thing I hope is I can make it three-all in the wins department on Saturday," Gollan said.

"I think Rob's horse is the better stayer and mine has the better turn of foot."
