Sweet Idea leads them home in Tristarc

Saturday 18 October 2014, 4:37pm

Sweet Idea will chase Group One glory after her win in the Tristarc Stakes at Caulfield.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained mare led throughout in the 1400m Group Two race on Saturday.

Waterhouse said the Myer Classic, a 1600m event for fillies and mares at Flemington on November 1 was the Group One target for the daughter of Snitzel who has had six previous attempts at the highest level.

Ridden by Tommy Berry, Sweet Idea ($3.40 fav) scored a three-quarter length victory over Girl Guide ($6) with Catkins ($4) a length-and-a-quarter away.

Waterhouse said she will keep Sweet Idea to her "own sex" after her dominant victory in the Tristarc Stakes.

"There's 500,000 reasons why and it's called the Myer Classic," Waterhouse said.

"That was the decision why we didn't run her in the Toorak last week.

"I love it when she can skip along in front and say catch me if you can."

Waterhouse said Sweet Idea was a $200,000 purchase as a yearling at the Magic Millions sale at the Gold Coast and her victory on Saturday took her prizemoney past the $2 million mark.

Berry said Sweet Idea got away with some cheap sectionals in front, noting that you don't give a mare of her quality an easy run in front.

He said she quickened nicely into the straight but then waited for the others to come at her before responding again in the run to the line.

Asked whether Sweet Idea would be as effective stepping up to the 1600m of the Myer, Berry said if the blinkers are taken off she will be hard to beat.

"She travelled a little bit keen today," Berry said.

"She's tough, she's honest and it's not going to be the toughest race going around.
