Birchley spreads team across two states

Thursday 23 October 2014, 11:54am

Trainer Liam Birchley is hoping to start Saturday on a high note in Melbourne and finish it with a winner in Brisbane.

Birchley has two genuine chances in the opening race on the Cox Plate day program at Moonee Valley in two-year-old fillies Hot Snippety and Syn City who line up in the $250,000 Inglis Banner (1000m).

Hot Snippity won her only start at Doomben and Syn City took out the Hopeful Plate in Toowoomba making them the only winners in Saturday's field.

"Both my fillies have gone nicely since getting down there," Birchley said.

"Zac Purton will ride Hot Snippity and James McDonald is on Syn City so we have got the A-grade jockeys.

"There are a lot of first starters on Saturday so we aren't getting too confident but the two of them are raced in similar interests and it is a thrill for owners to have runners on such a big day."

Birchley has been one of Queensland's most successful trainers during Melbourne spring carnival time and in recent years has won races with the likes of Missy Longstocking, Emmalene and Liesele.

The stable has a busy day in Brisbane with six runners including Goldslick in the Carly-Mae Pye Memorial Handicap.

The winner of nine races, Goldslick was formerly trained by Mick Kent in Melbourne where she won twice at Flemington and placed in Group Two company.

"She has been back with me for three months and has come along nicely but as a stakes-placed mare she is a bit hard to fit in around Brisbane racing," Birchley said.

"Goldslick probably needs a wet track to do her best but we are looking at the black-type races around Christmas for her."

Bookmakers have assessed Birchley's best chance as Rock Royalty who will be aiming for his third win in a row in the Superiorpak Handicap.
