Atmosphere poised to break maiden in Vase

Thursday 23 October 2014, 12:10pm

Singapore trainer Shane Baertschiger could be excused if his mind wanders from the Kranji meeting on Friday night.

Baertschiger has four runners at Kranji but on Saturday he has one of the leading chances in the Moonee Valley Vase.

New Zealanders Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young prepare the Baertschiger-owned Atmosphere, currently the $6 second favourite for the Vase and third favourite at $8.50 for Saturday week's Victoria Derby at Flemington.

Baertschiger and Busuttin have had a long association from their years in Singapore when Baertschiger was assistant-trainer for his father Don, while Trent worked for his father Paddy.

It was through this association that Baertschiger purchased Atmosphere with a Derby bid in mind.

Although still a maiden, Atmosphere has indicated he will relish a longer trip and placed himself in Derby contention with a last-start second over 1800m at Flemington on October 4.

Baertschiger said Atmosphere had worked impressively at Moonee Valley's Breakfast With The Best on Tuesday morning.

"Trent was really happy with his work," Baertschiger said.

"He worked with Silent Achiever. He looked to go better than her and ran the second fastest last 400 (metres) of the morning."

Nash Rawiller rides Atmosphere on Saturday but a jockey is yet to be confirmed for the Derby.

Baertschiger revealed he had received a few offers to buy a stake in Atmosphere but had refused them.

"I've had a few offers for 10 per cent of the horse but have knocked them back," Baertschiger said.

"If someone wants to give me a million (dollars) for him then they can have him."

Baertschiger said Atmosphere would spell after the Derby and be prepared for the autumn.
