Sandown meeting to go ahead despite fire

Wednesday 12 November 2014, 3:59pm

The Zipping Classic meeting will go ahead on Saturday despite a fire damaging part of the grandstand at Melbourne's Sandown Racecourse.

An upper level restaurant and bar at the racecourse in Springvale were significantly damaged in the fire, the CFA said.

Melbourne Racing Club head of communications and racing Jake Norton said the fire started in a covered outdoor area of the northern end of the grandstand.

It will not affect Saturday's race meeting, he said.

"Due to the location of the fire which was at the opposite end to any horse movement areas the race meeting on Saturday will go ahead unaffected," Norton said.

The Group Two Zipping Classic program is the last feature race meeting of the Melbourne spring carnival.
