After a luckless spring campaign, Shoreham will be given the chance to go for a break on a winning note when he lines up in Saturday's Sandown Cup.
Shoreham was being aimed at the Melbourne Cup and looked to be on track when he finished seventh in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington in October.
But his campaign unravelled with a sixth in the Geelong Cup and seventh in the Lexus Stakes, a race in which a top-three finish would have secured him a Melbourne Cup start.
Trainer Saab Hasan says the gelding has pulled up well from the Lexus and despite having to lump topweight of 58kg over 3200m on Saturday, he believes Shoreham will be hard to stop.
"We put a lot of groundwork into him and I think that has held him in good stead," Hasan said.
"He's come through it (the Lexus) well. He's eating good and looks great in the coat."
Craig Williams rides Shoreham in the Sandown feature, a booking Hasan secured not long after the Lexus Stakes.
Hasan said Williams had only ridden for him once before but he was impressed by the jockey's professionalism.
"I rang (Williams's manager) Mark Guest straight after the race and asked whether he would commit two weeks out to the Sandown Cup," Hasan said.
"We were toying with the idea of running in the Queen Elizabeth (last Saturday) but with the tracks firm we decided to wait and give him the extra week to get over the run."
Hasan isn't concerned by the 3200m trip, believing Shoreham could have finished in the top ten in the Melbourne Cup.
At his only previous attempt at the distance the horse was fourth in the Andrew Ramsden at Flemington in May when Hasan said Shoreham was coming off two "gut busters" and had to carry 60kg.
"He's a hard-trying little fella, so genuine," Hasan said.
"I want him to win on Saturday, go out on a winning note and have a good four to six week break and then come back for the autumn."
