Trainer David Hayes is setting his sights higher with Wawail after her win in the City Of Greater Dandenong Stakes at Sandown.
Undefeated in three starts, Hayes believes Wawail has a lot of improvement, especially in her appearance.
Ridden by Michael Walker, Wawail ($9) scored by a head from the fast finishing $2.60 favourite Wine Tails with More Radiant ($4.20) a half-head away third.
Hayes said Wawail still looked "woolly and wintry" in the coat and that he was "almost embarrassed" when she entered the parade ring.
He said the filly would now head for a spell with black type next to her name and suggested either the Australian Guineas or the Randwick Guineas run on the same day in March could be a target for the filly.
"It might be a year for a filly coming through," Hayes said.
"She's three for three and still doesn't look right yet.
"It was a long last furlong but to pick up black type with a beautifully bred filly will be a big thrill for Sheikh Hamdan."
After winning on debut at Caulfield last December, Wawail chipped a knee and needed, requiring time on the sidelines before returning with victory at Moonee Valley on October 31.
Walker said he didn't want to lead on Wawail, but the filly began brilliantly and other riders were just expecting him to roll forward.
"I was able to slow them up and then she lengthened well when I wanted," Walker said.
"She's showing a lot of improvement."
