Dalradian a rare early 2YO winner for Weir

Saturday 24 October 2015, 1:52pm

Darren Weir isn't noted for producing early season two-year-old winners but he has a tenacious type in Dalradian.

The son of Reward For Effort made it two wins in as many starts when taking out the Inglis Banner at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

A debut winner at Bendigo, Dalradian was backed from $12 into $6 before scoring a half-head win over Valliano ($7) with Pearl Congenial ($7.50) 1-1/4 lengths away third.

Weir, who has a large number of two-year-olds on his books, is reluctant to have two-year-old runners early in the season.

"I usually give them a lot of time," Weir said.

"This one is one that was very sound but I don't push them."

Dalradian was a $55,000 yearling purchase at the Inglis sale in Melbourne being selected by noted bloodstock agent John Foote.

"He was a very precocious walking, great temperament yearling and he's followed that tradition all the way through," Weir said.

Weir described Dalradian as a `tough little bugger' and he could see no reason why he wouldn't back up into the Maribyrnong Plate at Flemington on the final day of the Melbourne Cup carnival.

Winning rider Brad Rawiller said he had planned to lead aboard the colt but was slow to begin.

"I thought he would win on straightening with the run we had but at the same time the other horse kept giving a kick," Rawiller said.

"The start almost cost him and once he gets that sorted out he'll be better again."
