Hunter escapes charges in Oliver scandal

One of the central figures in the Damien Oliver betting scandal has escaped being charged.

Mark Hunter, the professional punter and former AFL player who Oliver phoned to place a $10,000 bet on Miss Octopussy in a race at Moonee Valley in October 2010, was investigated racing Victoria stewards over the matter.

Hunter, who has co-operated with the Racing Victoria committee that investigated the case, passed Oliver's bet onto a retired Queensland bookmaker Laurie Bricknell who placed it with various bookies.

No charges will be laid against Bricknell.

Oliver, who rode the second favourite in the same race, was disqualifed for 10 months for making the bet.

The committe made up of deputy chairman of stewards Rob Montgomery and steward James Hitchcock and assisted by Racing Victoria lawyer Tony Burns announce the result their inquiries in a statement.

They gave no reasons for the decision.

A charge against trainer Robert Smerdon, who passed the proceeds of the winning bet from Hunter to Oliver, stands.

It will be heard by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board on Thursday, February 7.
