Chautauqua favourite to land 4th G1 win

Thursday 10 March 2016, 6:58am

Chautauqua is the $2.40 favourite to join a select group of horses to carry 58kg or more to victory in the Newmarket Handicap.

Lightning Stakes winner Chautauqua headlines the field of 11 for Saturday's Group One 1200m handicap at Flemington with three-year-old Japonisme considered the biggest danger at $4.20.

If successful on Saturday, Chautauqua would become the fourth horse in the metric era to carry 58kg or more to victory in a Newmarket.

Hay List holds the modern-day weight-carrying record having lumped 58.5kg to a narrow win in 2012.

A year earlier the unbeaten champion Black Caviar won with 58kg while Shaftesbury Avenue also won with 58kg in 1991.

Chautauqua will be striving for his fourth Group One victory and also is out to go one better than his second to Brazen Beau in the Newmarket last year.

Brazen Beau was trained by Chris Waller who has three-year-olds Japonisme and Counterattack and Darley Classic winner Delectation in Saturday's race.

Two apprentices, Michael Dee and Jye McNeil, have rides in the race while Patrick Moloney has the ride on Keen Array in his first week as a senior jockey.
