Music Magnate on comeback trail

Monday 11 December 2017, 12:28pm

Music Magnate has negotiated the first step on his comeback to racing after injury dashed any hope of the Group One-winning sprinter competing in the inaugural $10 million Everest.

The Bjorn Baker-trained six-year-old returned to action by winning a barrier trial at Rosehill on Friday and will now be aimed at the Christmas Classic (1200m) at Randwick on December 30.

"I watched from afar and it went well. It was good to see him back. He had a decent hit out," Baker said.

"He's fit and well and back to a hundred per cent."

Baker had hoped Music Magnate would secure one of the 12 slots for the Everest at Randwick in October, but those plans were abandoned after he chipped a fetlock in May.

Music Magnate was spelled after finishing last in the Group One Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm in May.

"The main thing is he's back in action," Baker said.

"We're looking at the Christmas Classic and then a couple of very early autumn targets."

Baker said the Group Two Expressway Stakes (1200m), a race Music Magnate won this year, was a possible target.

Music Magnate began his career in late 2014 and passed $1 million in prize money when runner-up to Hopfgarten in the Group Two Victory Stakes (1200m) at Doomben in April.
