It has been a long time between drinks for the Darren Weir-trained Midnight Glory who registered his first win in two years at Caulfield on Saturday.
It was a patient ride from jockey Brad Rawiller who had been content to let the six-year-old gelding sit behind the pack for most of the Tracy Thomas Handicap (1800m) before giving him his head with about 200 metres remaining.
Midnight Glory ($6.50) last tasted victory at Morphettville in July, 2011 and he turned the tables on race favourite Zuma Roc ($6) who beat him at Flemington on July 6.
Weir said he did not give Rawiller, who rode Midnight Glory to a third place at Caulfield on July 13, any instructions for the race.
"He thought it was a great run last start and if he got a bit of luck and a bit of cover from the barrier, he was going to run well," Weir said.
The win consolidates Weir's sixth position on the metropolitan trainers' premiership table with 37 wins for the season and puts him just one win behind three trainers tied for third place - Robert Smerdon, Peter Snowden and Mick Price.
"We had plans to be in the top 10 this year and it's a credit to all the people back home who have worked hard," Weir said.
Midnight Glory's strong run over the closing stages allowed him to win by a length from St Mark ($6) with Dayita another 1-1/4 lengths away third.
Zuma Rock finished fourth - 2-1/2 lengths from the winner.
