Things haven't gone well for Sidestep in two starts this campaign and trainer Peter Snowden is hoping for better luck with the colt's stablemate Guelph.
Runner-up in the Golden Slipper, Sidestep failed to get clear running when he resumed with a fourth in the San Domenico Stakes and came out of Saturday's Run to The Rose with a cut leg after being checked early and shuffled back to last.
Guelph finished fourth in the Slipper then stepped up in distance to claim the Group One double of the Sires' Produce and Champagne Stakes, earning her the title of NSW champion two-year-old.
She has had a trouble free preparation ahead of her return in Saturday's Furious Stakes at Randwick, tuning up with a recent barrier trial win.
Snowden said Guelph's biggest asset was her early maturity, mentally and physically.
"She was more developed than the others as a two-year-old," Snowden said.
"She is big and strong. She was always mature for a two-year-old and that was her forte.
"She is much the same now as a three-year-old."
Darley's head trainer will monitor Sidestep over the coming days before making a decision on his next run.
He has eased to double figures for the Golden Rose while former favourite Overreach, who beat him in the Slipper, has been taken out of the market after a delay to her spring return.
Guelph is the second favourite for the Thousand Guineas (1600m) on October 16 behind the David Hayes-trained Gregers.
Sweet Idea, the other horse to finish in front of Guelph in the Slipper, is serving a compulsory three-month ban after bleeding during her close second to Thump in the Silver Shadow Stakes.
The John Thompson-trained Thump is expected to run in the Furious (1200m), the second leg of the Princess Series.
However Thompson does not intend to progress to the Tea Rose (1400m) or the Flight Stakes (1600m) believing those distances are beyond the filly.
