Moody has two chances in WA Group Ones

Sunday 17 November 2013, 4:20pm

MELBOURNE Nov 17 AAP - Trainer Peter Moody is heading west in search of his first Group One success since the retirement of champion Black Caviar.

Melbourne's premier trainer has had a lean spring carnival at home and is hoping to change that with two runners headed to Group One assignments at Ascot in Perth on Saturday.

Moment Of Change runs in the Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) and Plucky Belle will contest the $1 million Railway Stakes (1600m).

"Moment Of Change has held his form and Plucky Belle is absolutely flying," Moody said.

A Group One winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes last year, Moment Of Change hasn't won since, but has been consistent at the top level including a second to Black Caviar in the Lightning in February and a last-start third in the VRC Sprint Classic at Flemington.

That race was won by Queensland star Buffering who backed up his breakthrough Group One win in the Manikato Stakes with a dominant performance at Flemington.

Buffering is favourite for the Winterbottom ahead of local star Barakey with Moment Of Change on the third line of betting.

"Moment Of Change is going to need luck to beat Buffering but he has always been in the mix in those sorts of races," Moody said.

"You've got to be in it to win it, you're not going to have luck at home."

With Buffering expected to take up his usual front running role, Moody hopes Moment Of Change can get a nice run behind a good speed to give him an opportunity to mount a late challenge.

Stable jockey Luke Nolen was stood down from riding at Caulfield on Saturday after injuring his right knee when he was thrown from his horse in the mounting yard before the first race.

Scans on Saturday afternoon didn't show any obvious damage but he will have further tests on his knee on Monday.

Plucky Belle earned her shot at The Railway with victory in the Group Three Lavazza Stakes (1400m) on Melbourne Cup day when she defeated the classy Arinosa.

Connections decided to pay a late entry fee for the Railway and she is on the fourth line of betting.

"We weren't sure that we would go from Sydney to Melbourne and then over to Perth. But when she won at Flemington and pulled up well we were happy to do it," Moody said.
