Prolific Victorian country jockey Craig Robertson has claimed the Donald Cup aboard Me Hungi ahead of an enforced break to undergo wrist surgery.
Me Hungi is part-owned by Carol Wilson, wife of one of the greatest country riders ever, Neville "Nifty" Wilson who retired last year at the age of 65 due to injury.
Neville Wilson was on hand to see Robertson steer the $3.40 favourite along the fence and through a narrow gap to win the $50,000 race over 1620m.
Trained by Geoff Daffy, Me Hungi beat Magic Me ($10) by a long head with Hinchley Wood ($6) a half neck third.
Robertson said he would be off the scene for about two months.
"I'm rapt," Robertson said.
"It's the last time I'll ride him for a while. I'm having a wrist operation tomorrow and I'll be out for a couple of months."
Robertson has ridden Me Hungi in all his 15 starts which have netted six wins so far with a trip to next year's Warrnambool Cup on the horizon.
Wilson praised Robertson's ride and the decision to put blinkers on Me Hungi which gave him the confidence to go inside horses.
"The ride probably won him the race today but he's definitely looking for 2000 metres and we'll progress that way, Wilson said.
"We thought as a younger horse that he'd want blinkers but he used to run a bit hard and Craig (Robertson) recommended that we hold off on them.
"They've given him the confidence to go between horses."
The Victorian country Cups circuit moves to Ballarat next weekend with the meeting also featuring the Magic Millions race for two-year-olds run in the reverse direction.
The initiative began last year to give Victorian youngsters the opportunity to race clockwise as they do at the Gold Coast where the $2 million Magic Millions is held in January.
