Dean Yendall to ride Boomwaa in Lightning

Wednesday 5 February 2014, 3:14pm

Dean Yendall has been booked to ride two-year-old Boomwaa at the light weight of 46kg in Saturday week's Group One Lightning Stakes at Flemington.

Trainer Robbie Laing confirmed the gelding would contest the 1000m weight-for-age sprint against the older horses and said Yendall had been chosen for the ride over Dean Holland who was also in the mix.

"Dean Yendall got the nod. So he'll have to go on a diet," Laing said.

"He just told me he could (ride at 46kg)."

Boomwaa won the Maribyrnong Plate over the Lightning Stakes course and distance by three lengths against his own age in the spring carrying 56.5kg.

The gelding, who finished second in the Inglis Classic in Sydney at his most recent start, was nominated for Saturday's Blue Diamond colts and geldings Prelude but wasn't among the final field with Laing opting to go to the Lightning.

"He is jumping out of his skin. He'll give them something to chase with 46 kilos on his back," the trainer said.
