Shamalia wins the Listed Fireball Stakes

Saturday 15 March 2014, 7:28pm

Shamalia has claimed the closely contested final race of Saturday's stormy Randwick meeting.

Co-trainer James Cummings, who prepares the filly with his grandfather Bart, said her devastating turn of foot helped her hold off a late charge by Sidestep and take out the Listed Fireball Stakes (1100m).

An afternoon storm had threatened to derail his plans for the filly who went into the race off a five-week break since her fifth in a Group Three race at Caulfield.

"I was sitting up in my battler's corporate box just praying this storm went because this horse needed a run today," Cummings said.

"You can see what she can do."

Jockey Glyn Schofield praised Shamalia's courage, and said she was exhausted after crossing the finish line.

"I thought that barging my way through might have taken a bit of a sting out of my finish," he said.

"But she put her head down and found the line."

He said to win against such a high-quality field suggests a bright future for the three-year-old.

Shamalia was now likely to be aimed at the Gosford Guineas for her next run, Cummings said.

She races in Dato Tan Chin Nam's black and white checked colours also carried to third by Eurozone in Saturday's Group One Randwick Guineas.

Third place in the Fireball was also tightly contested, with Boss Lane edging out Flight Academy in a photo finish.
