Kaypers breaks drought in Randwick victory

Saturday 26 April 2014, 1:23pm

Kaypers will be given the chance to continue his winning run in his hometown of Scone after breaking a sequence of outs at Randwick on Saturday.

The six-year-old had been racing in great heart, including a close-up fourth in the Newcastle Newmarket, but had not won for 20 months.

His consistency was finally rewarded in the TAB Early Quaddie Handicap (1400m) when he finished strongly down the outside to claim the leaders before holding off the fast-finishing Loaded to score by a head.

Trainer Greg Bennett, renowned as the man who broke in three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva, was thrilled to win a race over the Sydney autumn carnival.

"Just to be a little part of it is great," said Bennett, trains at Scone in the NSW Upper Hunter Valley.

"We're at the bottom end of it in this type of race but the owners are over the moon."

Bennett confirmed Kaypers had earned a shot at the $200,000 Scone Cup (1600m) on May 16.

Centennial Park, who earned more $1 million in prize money during his 60-start career, has been retired after finishing last.
