Champion jockey Glen Boss rates emerging stayer Zephyron as an ideal Brisbane Cup contender after his victory in the Premier's Cup at Doomben on Saturday.
Boss feared the wrath of the Hawkes stable when he made an early move on Zephyron ($4) but the gelding answered the challenge to win by 3/4 length from last year's winner Precedence ($6) to give champion stallion Zabeel a one-two result.
"Michael (Hawkes) drummed it into me not to go to early on him but I was going to be held up for a run if I didn't go when I did," Boss said.
"I could feel Michael's hands around my neck but in the end he did it comfortably and was never really going to be beaten."
Boss believes Zephyron is the ideal type for the Group Two Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 7.
"He's a really strong stayer with a great set of lungs and he'll eat up the 2400 metres in the Brisbane Cup," he said.
Michael Hawkes placed one proviso on the chances of Zephyron running again in a fortnight.
"He'll go home now and if the weather is fine he'll come back for the Brisbane Cup but if not he'll go to the paddock instead," he said.
"This is only his second preparation for us and he's really starting to put it together.
"Like most Zabeels he's getting better as he gets older so hopefully it's onwards and upwards with him."
