Tinto bidding for historic double

Wednesday 18 June 2014, 12:24pm

Queensland Oaks winner Tinto will be chasing a slice of history when she tackles the Group Three Tattersall's Cup at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

No horse has won the Oaks and the Tattersall's Cup, one of Queensland's oldest races, in the same year.

Champion mare Bright Shadow is the only horse to claim both races having won the Oaks in 1968 and the Tattersall's Cup a year later.

However, Tinto's bid to become the first filly to win the Oaks and Tattersall's Cup in the same season is not without precedence.

The Lawrie Mayfield-Smith trained Sonata ran second to subsequent Caulfield Cup winner Arctic Scent in the 1996 Oaks and then won the Tattersall's Cup three weeks later.

Sydney trainer Neville Begg's filly Travel Light caused an upset in the 1986 Oaks and was narrowly beaten by top mare Dinky Flyer in the Tattersall's Cup.

Tinto's trainer Rex Lipp said he was unaware of the history of three-year-old fillies in the 2200m race.

"It is interesting because a few people told me it was the first time anyone had attempted it," Lipp said.

He said the decision to start Tinto in the Cup was made after connections opted to miss the Melbourne spring carnival.

"She has had a long campaign going into the Oaks and she really wouldn't have had a long enough spell had we decided to go to Melbourne," Lipp said.

"I sat down with the owners and we decided she could run in the Tatt's, have a spell and then come back for the Stayers Cup at the Magic Millions in January."

The Sydney autumn and Brisbane winter carnivals will be on her radar next year.

"There are plenty of races for her and why knock her around after she has done such a good job. She is tough but you don't want to overdo it with horses like her," Lipp said.

Tinto is part owned by Grania McAlpine, the wife of Eureka Stud's studmaster Scott McAlpine who is also the president of the Tattersall's Racing Club.

Scott McAlpine's horse Spirit Of Boom is favourite to win the prestigious Queensland Horse of the Year award but a victory by Tinto on Saturday could give her cause to challenge him for the title.
