Surrounded by family and friends, Wendy Walter has trained her first city winner since the sudden death of her husband Guy.
Fittingly, the victory by Sense Of Occasion came at Warwick Farm, the western Sydney racetrack where Guy Walter made his name as one of Australian racing's best trainers.
Less than a week after training Streama to win the Doomben Cup, Walter died after a heart attack following trackwork last month, aged 59.
Wendy has been granted an interim licence to train but only last week she revealed she would step down from that role on July 5 with Joe Pride to take over the stables from where her husband prepared 36 Group One winners.
Her support group at Wednesday's midweek meeting included Blake Shinn, the leading jockey who formed a formidable combination with her husband.
"All the staff at home have stayed strong through a really tough time," Shinn said.
Sense Of Occasion was taken on from the middle stages but kicked strongly on the turn for a decisive win.
"That was a good indication for the future, that he looks a class stayer in the making," winning rider Sam Clipperton said.
