Hay List's brother poised for Flemington

Tuesday 24 June 2014, 4:45pm

Three-year-old Hay One is likely to debut at the scene of his brother's greatest triumph at Flemington on Saturday.

Hay List produced a mighty performance at Flemington to win the Group One Newmarket Handicap under 58.5kg in 2012 as one of four wins at the highest level.

Hay One is set to start his career on the famous Flemington straight course in the fifth heat of the AR Creswick Series (1100m).

Trainer Stephen Brown had a simple answer to those wondering about Hay One's potential to match his brother.

"He's not as good as Hay List, that's certain, but not many horses are," Brown said.

Hay List's imposing build made him immediately recognisable on a racetrack. Brown said Hay One is powerfully built but not as tall as his brilliant sibling.

"He's a lot shorter than his brother but he's built like a brick outhouse," Brown said.

"He's strong and he goes all right."

Brown said he had Hay One almost ready to debut as a two-year-old but an injury forced him to wait almost a year before running the Statue Of Liberty gelding.

The Flemington-based trainer said he gave Hay One time to mature further and develop physically before adopting a patient approach to his training.

"He had a bit of a knee issue," Brown said.

"He's had that issue fixed since and he's had a good spell and I've brought him up slowly."

Brown entered Hay One for races on the Geelong Synthetic track and at Bendigo but decided to start the three-year-old on his home track.

But the 1100-metre trip of Saturday's $100,000 was not Brown's preferred distance for Hay One's debut but the winter programming left him with no shorter alternative.

Brown will also run The Thief in the eighth heat of the All Victorian Sprint Series (1100m).

The Thief qualified for the $150,000 final on July 12 when he won an earlier heat at Flemington on June 14.

Brown said Time Thief showed he had the potential to win a stakes race when he powered home after beginning moderately last time out.
