Jockey Damian Lane had to get his next move exactly right on Pillar Of Creation rounding the home turn of the Sheen Group Handicap at Caulfield.
Pillar Of Creation was full of running when held up behind the leaders at the 400m as the pressure increased.
But Lane remained calm, waiting another 50m before easing Pillar Of Creation into a gap outside the leaders before the gelding did the rest, finishing gamely to beat the bold front-runner First Course ($61) by a long neck while Chile Express ($17) was third.
On-track punters had launched into Pillar Of Creation, backing him from $4.60 into a $3.70 favourite.
"What about the ride? The ride definitely won the race," Simon Zahra, who trains Pillar Of Creation in partnership with Mathew Ellerton, said.
"The horse is going extremely well but Damian rode him a treat. He grabbed hold of him early and didn't panic on the corner."
Pillar Of Creation posted his second straight win after the four-year-old won over 1200m at Moonee Valley but Zahra said the consistent performer's form could make him hard to place in the coming weeks.
"His rating will go through the roof now," Zahra said.
Zahra said backing up Pillar Of Creation in next Saturday's Listed Winter Championship Final at Flemington was an option.
However, Zahra said Pillar Of Creation was a better horse with his runs spaced.
