A drop in trip paid dividends for the connections of Profit Share at Sandown on Saturday.
The Darren Weir-trained gelding proved costly when second as favourite at Moonee Valley last start when run down over 1500m.
Weir decided to keep the blinkers on the gelding after he had over-raced at Moonee Valley and reasoned the drop in distance would help.
Ridden by Michelle Payne, Profit Share scored a two-length victory from stablemate Stratum Star ($6) in the William Hill Plate (1300m).
The race was billed as a lead-up to the next month's Australian Guineas at Flemington with both Weir gallopers among nominations.
Other Guineas contenders included third-placed Merion, Chivalry (fourth) and Onerous (fifth).
"I probably won't go down the Guineas path with him," Weir said.
"We'll go the VOBIS Gold path and head down the Guineas path with the other horse.
"I thought he (Stratum Star) wound up well but just peaked on his run in the last 50 yards.
"He'll benefit from that a lot."
