Lumosty on path to Qld Group One target

Monday 18 May 2015, 5:58pm

Impressive first-up winner Lumosty continues on her path to an interstate Group One target when she takes on the older horses again in the Straight Six at Flemington.

The filly is also nominated for a three-year-old race against her own sex on Saturday but trainer Robert Smerdon has confirmed the stakes winner will run in the Listed Straight Six (1200m).

The plan is for Lumosty to then head to Brisbane for feature races.

Lumosty scored a dominant three-length win against older horses at Flemington on May 9, showing she had come back in top order after having a bone chip removed after last year's spring carnival.

"She was good first-up and she has ticked over quite well since," Smerdon said.

"The idea is to run on Saturday and then head to Brisbane where two weeks beyond that there's the option of the Stradbroke.

"But I'm told she's well down the order, so she's unlikely to make the field in which case she would run in the Dane Ripper Stakes on the same day.

"It makes no difference to programming, and then two weeks beyond that she would go to the Tatt's Tiara."

Smerdon believes the longer spell Lumosty needed after having the fetlock surgery could prove a blessing for the daughter of Fastnet Rock.

"With that enforced break I think that's been beneficial to her," he said.

"She spelled well, came back in really good order and has looked terrific the whole way through.

"She's quite strong and has taken the next step in terms of maturity."

The Group One Tattersall's Tiara (1400m) for fillies and mares is at the Gold Coast on June 20.

Lumosty won the Group Two Fillies Classic at Moonee Valley last spring but was unplaced in Thousand Guineas and VRC Oaks.

"As a Group Two winner what she needs now is some semblance of Group One form," Smerdon said.

Chris Parnham rode Lumosty first-up but Dwayne Dunn takes over on Saturday in the Straight Six which has attracted 26 entries.
