Robbie Griffiths wishes he had more time up his sleeve but the trainer is aiming to have classy mare Angelic Light back to defend the McEwen Stakes.
Angelic Light caused an upset in last year's Group Two sprint when she chased down reigning Australian Horse of the Year Lankan Rupee in the weight-for-age race at Moonee Valley.
She then finished fourth in the Moir Stakes and was second in a blanket finish in the Group One Manikato Stakes at the same track.
Those two Group One Moonee Valley sprints are again targets for Angelic Light this spring.
Griffiths was forced to abandon plans to run Angelic Light in two Group One races in Adelaide in May after she was found to have a slight problem with her right front tendon, the same tendon she injured earlier in her career.
Griffiths said recent scans were perfect as Angelic Light built towards a spring campaign.
"We're hoping to kick her off in the McEwen on the fifth of September, subject to whether her fitness levels are ready for that," Griffiths said.
"She's been a little behind after we had a little hiccup in the late autumn heading towards Adelaide.
"She did a little pace work during the week and she seems well so we're hoping we're on target for September 5, which will be a lead-in to the Group One Moir Stakes.
"She's certainly very well and the recent scans are perfect. It's just a question of whether we're behind the eight-ball with fitness."
Angelic Light raced once in the autumn, finishing midfield in the William Reid Stakes in late March at Moonee Valley before the rest of her planned campaign was scrapped because of the tendon issue.
Last year's Moir Stakes winner Buffering is preparing for his defence after also recovering from injury.
He is back in Robert Heathcote's Brisbane stable and the trainer says he is pleased with his progress from a leg injury.
