The decision to concentrate on city staying races rather than country cups with Hot Saga reaped another dividend when the gelding scored at Doomben on Saturday.
After Hot Saga won at the Sunshine Coast, trainer Jack Duncan had considered taking the gelding north for the Cairns Cup.
Hot Saga has mixed his racing between Brisbane and north Queensland where he won six races, including the 2014 Innisfail Cup.
However, Duncan decided Hot Saga would be up to city open company and decided to stay in Brisbane where the gelding ran a good fifth over 2200m at Doomben two weeks ago.
Hot Saga ($5.50) ran up to that form when he beat the favourite Kaypers ($2.40) by 3/4 length with two lengths to Flying Lucky ($5.50) in the Bottle-O Handicap (2200m).
Jockey Jeff Lloyd continued his good start to the season with a clever ride to score his eighth win of the season on Hot Saga.
Favourite Notonyourlife ($3.60) overcame a slow start to come from last to win the Commercial Hotel Nambour Handicap (1200m).
John Fleming, foreman for winning trainer Tony Gollan, said the stable had a big opinion of Notonyourlife.
"We only got her mid-preparation last time. This time in Tony has been able to train her the way he wants and it is paying off," he said.
