South African wins International challenge

Thursday 10 December 2015, 8:08am

Sydney jockeys Hugh Bowman and James McDonald have finished out of the money in the International Jockeys Championship in Hong Kong won by Gavin Lerena.

The South African champion won the last two legs of the four-race series at Happy Valley on Wednesday night to fend off Ryan Moore.

But both Lerena and Moore came away from the meeting with suspensions for incidents in one of the legs won by Moore on the David Hall-trained Happy And Healthy.

"Coming here my dad told me just to enjoy myself, so I was feeling no great pressure," Lerena said.

"I would certainly consider coming to ride here. This is the best place to be and the atmosphere is electric.

"It's great to be riding against such great riders and we have a lot of respect for each other."

McDonald and Bowman finished ninth and 10th respectively but get the chance to showcase their talents again at Sunday's International meeting at Sha Tin.
