Farrier works magic with Miss Softhands

Wednesday 6 January 2016, 5:33pm

A visit to the Werribee veterinary clinic and an internationally renowned farrier has resulted in Miss Softhands maintaining an unbeaten record this campaign.

At her first start in eight months, Miss Softhands scored a comfortable win at Sale on December 11 before graduating to a city win in the Grand Hotel Frankston Handicap at Sandown on Wednesday.

Trainer Colin Little revealed Miss Softhands suffered from severe foot problems during her last campaign.

But the visit to Werribee and the farrier has resulted in Miss Softhands changing her galloping action with excellent results.

"She only had about eight millimetres of clearance between the bone and the sole," Little said.

"That's not enough and they're always feeling a bit of bruising in the bone.

"So the farrier did a lot of work to grow some feet and get the angle of her shoes right and now she has about 15 millimetres clearance, almost double what she had before."

Ridden by Noel Callow, Miss Softhands, the $2.15 favourite, scored a three-quarter length victory from Shacarde ($5) with Marrakesh ($5.50) 1-1/2 lengths away third.

Little now hopes he can get the daughter of Bel Esprit to settle in her races with the intention of getting her out in distance further than the 1300m she was successful over on Wednesday.

He said Miss Softhands was showing signs of stress around the stable following her first-up Sale success and started to pull too hard.

"We had to work pretty hard to get her unwound," Little said.

"I'm sure Noel didn't want to go that early, but she was pulling that hard he just let her go.

"It's a bit of a concern so we'll having to keep working on that."
