The first start for Wanna Get A What in a Highway race for country-trained horses will also be the Canberra sprinter's final appearance in the popular series,
Wanna Get A What made himself ineligible for the future Highways with an all-the-way win at Hawkesbury over 1100m.
Providing the right result in a carefully constructed campaign to target Saturday's race, trainer Gratz Vella admitted he won on two fronts.
"I had a bit of confidence that he would run well and I had a couple of dollars on him," Vella said.
A three-year-old forced to give weight to his older rivals, Wanna Get A What made the running for Tommy Berry and held off Ruthless Agent to make it four wins from eight starts.
"After he won at Canberra (two) starts ago, I had this race in mind for him," Vella said.
Wanna Get A What took on stronger company at Wagga Wagga and was beaten into second place but the run convinced Vella the gelding would be well placed in a Highway race.
"I found out a lot about him at Wagga Wagga and I couldn't wait for this race today."
The win was also Vella's first in the Highway series, prompting the trainer to declare: "It's about bloody time."
