Midnight Dancer breaks duck at Doomben

Wednesday 10 September 2014, 3:38pm

Beautifully bred mare Midnight Dancer gave her stud value a timely boost when she finally broke her maiden status at Doomben on Wednesday.

Starting the $2.20 favourite, Midnight Dancer was having her 15th start and did the job in style, scoring by 5-1/4 lengths in the Turner Freeman Lawyers Handicap (1350m).

The mare is due to be served by first season sire Sizzling this spring.

It was a super training performance from Tony Gollan who brought Midnight Dancer back sharply in distance after she ran over 2200m and 1666m at her previous two starts.

"The owners were very keen for her to get a metropolitan win before she goes to stud," Gollan said.

"This race was suitable for her so we brought her back in distance.

"She has been booked into Sizzling and this win will give her stud value a boost. She is on the float as soon as we can get it here."

Midnight Dancer, by Danehill Dancer and a full sister to Group One placegetter Kimillsy, cost $170,000 when she was bought for a syndicate headed by Brisbane Race Club deputy chairman Peter Tighe.

"She was originally with (trainer) Alan Bailey on the Gold Coast and when he retired she went to Chris Waller in Sydney," Gollan said.

"She'd run six placings before today so you can say she had plenty of practice."

Meanwhile, trainer Rob Heathcote continued his good run of form when Jaspers Magic ($6) gave him his 10th metropolitan win of the season in the CFMEU - United Queensland Handicap (1350m).
