Ryan eyes Royal Ascot with Rubick

Saturday 11 October 2014, 3:42pm

Trainer Gerald Ryan has outlined his desire for a trip to the UK next year with his smart three-year-old Rubick.

Rubick made a winning return to racing when successful in the Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Supplying Kerrin McEvoy with a treble in successive races, Rubick ($4.60) scored by a length from Platelet (Ben Melham, $8) with Overreach (Tommy Berry, $3.40 fav) a neck away third.

Ryan said Rubick would have his next start in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on November 1 before going for a spell.

He said the colt would return for a couple of runs in the autumn before heading to the UK in the middle of the year.

"I've always wanted to go to Royal Ascot and I reckon this is the horse that might get me there," Ryan said.

"Ascot has been on the plan since last February.

"He's got the attitude to travel, but we've just got to get through his next three or four starts first."

After initially entering Rubick for the Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley on October 24, Ryan elected to scratch the colt from that race to concentrate on the Coolmore.

Rubick also had a delayed start to spring campaign following a virus.

"I purposely didn't accept for the Manikato. He'll go straight to the Coolmore and then he won't race again until the autumn," Ryan said.

"The virus never worried me. He only had it for 36 hours and he recovered really quick.

McEvoy said to ride a treble after breaking away from the Godolphin outfit was really pleasing.

"It's a great personal achievement on a quality day, given the new phase of my career," McEvoy said.

"This horse is very smart.
